January is knwon as ‘Thyroid Awareness Month’. The entire month is used to make people aware of the diseases associated with this butterfly-shaped gland. This is important for the timely diagnosis of health ailments. According to the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, an estimated 42 million people in India are currently suffering from thyroid diseases. The global prevalence of thyroid-associated diseases is also increasing day by day.

Thyroid and its significance

The thyroid is a gland located just below Adam’s apple in the neck. It is a part of the endocrine system that is known to regulate various body functions. The thyroid uses iodine from the food you eat and produces hormones that are important for the optimal function of your brain, kidneys, and liver. Also, it plays a vital role in the growth, metabolism, and development of your body. Hormones including triiodothyronine, tetraiodothyronine, and calcitonin are produced by the thyroid and they help in breathing, regulating cholesterol level, body weight, improving muscle strength, and maintaining heart rate.

Thyroid problems

Overactivity or under activity of the thyroid causes a hormonal imbalance in the body, that shows an array of symptoms. Here we tell you about a few common thyroid problems.


When your thyroid gland becomes overactive, it leads to hyperthyroidism. The condition is characterized by symptoms like restlessness, shaking, anxiety, weight loss, irritability, nervousness, trouble sleeping, etc. Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed by measuring the level of THS (Thyroid-stimulating hormone) and T4. An increased level of T4 and a low level of THS confirm the condition.


An underactive thyroid gland causes hypothyroidism. This means your gland is not able to produce a significant level of hormones. It leads to symptoms like memory problems, depression, dry skin, fatigue, constipation, slow heart rate, weight gain, etc. A high THS level in the body and a low level of T4 hormone confirms the condition.

Hashimoto’s disease

Also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s disease occurs when your own immune cells start attacking the thyroid gland mistakenly and make it unable to produce hormones anymore. Though it can affect anyone regardless of age, Hashimoto’s disease mostly affects middle-age women. The condition is characterized by symptoms like fatigue, dry skin, intolerance to cold, constipation, thinning hair, etc.

3) Foods that contain caffeine including your daily cup of coffee, tea and sodas contain compounds that could hamper with the production of iodine. If you are suffering from hypothyroidism and take medication for it, caffeine can also interfere with how these medicines function.

4) One of the common symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain. This is why it is best to stay away from foods that contribute to your growing waistline including sugar-based products like desserts, sodas, processed foods, candies etc. Weight gain will further hamper your metabolism.

5) Gluten-based products including bakery products such as biscuits, cakes, cookies, pastries also feature on the list of things that worsen hypothyroidism symptoms.

6) Those with an underactive thyroid must keep a check on their sodium intake as excess sodium can cause high blood pressure which is one of the health complications that could arise out of hypothyroidism. नई दिल्ली: भारत में थॉयराइड डिसाॅॅर्डर तेजी से बढ़ रहा है. देश में 4.2 करोड़ लोग हाइपोथॉयराइडिज्म, हाइपरथॉयराइडिज्म, हाशिमोटो थॉयराइडिटिस और थायरॉइड कैंसर जैसी थॉयराइड से जुड़ी बीमारियों के शिकार हैं. एक अध्ययन में यह जानकारी सामने आई है.

अध्ययन के मुताबिक भारत में हर 10 व्यस्कों में से एक व्यक्ति थाॅॅयराइड का शिकार है. महिलाओं में यह समस्या तीन गुना अधिक है. डायबिटीज से पीड़ित हर तीन में एक मरीज थॉयराइड की किसी न किसी समस्या से पीड़ित है और 44.3 फीसदी गर्भवती महिलाएं गर्भधारण के पहले तीन महीनों में हाइपोथॉयराइडिज्म से पीड़ित हो जाती हैं.

क्‍या है थॉयराइड बीमारी
जेपी हॉस्पिटल के एंडोक्राइनोलोजी विभाग की सीनियर कन्सलटेन्ट और को-ऑर्डिनेटर डॉ. निधी मल्होत्रा ने इस बारे में बताया, ‘थॉयराइड एक तितली के आकार की ग्लैंड है, जो हमारी गर्दन के सामने वाले हिस्से में होती है. यह शरीर के एंडोक्राइन सिस्टम का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है. इससे निकलने वाले हॉर्मोन शरीर के विभिन्न अंगों के कार्यों को प्रभावित करते हैं. थॉयराइड हॉर्मोन शरीर की मेटाबोलिक रेट पर नियन्त्रण बनाए रखता है’. डॉक्‍टर ने कहा, ‘थॉयराइड के एक तिहाई मरीज अपनी बीमारी के बारे में जानते तक नहीं हैं. इसका कारण यह है कि थॉयराइड के लक्षण बीमारी की गंभीरता पर निर्भर करते हैं. हाइपोथॉयराइडिज्म एंडोक्राइन सिस्टम की बीमारी है, जिसमें थॉयराइड ग्लैंड पर्याप्त मात्रा में थॉयराइड हॉर्मोन नहीं बना पाती’.

क्‍या होते हैं लक्षण
डॉक्‍टर बताते हैं कि इसमें आप अक्सर थका महसूस करेंगे. सुस्ती आना इस बीमारी का सबसे बड़ा लक्षण है, आपका वजन बढ़ सकता है, आपको कब्ज और अन्य गैस्ट्रो-इंटेस्टाइनल बीमारियां हो सकती हैं, आपको हर समय बहुत ज्यादा ठंड लग सकती है. हाथों और पैरों में सूजन आ सकती है, पेशियों में दर्द और ऐंठन हो सकती है. कुछ महिलाओं में लम्बे समय तक या अनियमित रूप से खून आने की समस्या हो सकती है. कुछ मामलों में गर्भधारण में मुश्किल आती है’.


क्‍या होता है बीमारी में
थॉयराइड की समस्याओं के कारण थॉयराइड ग्लैंड में सूजन आ जाती है, जिसे गॉयटर कहा जाता है. यह थॉयराइड की आम बीमारी है. अगर आपको थॉयराइड गॉयटर है तो आपको निगलने में परेशानी हो सकती है, सांस लेने में परेशानी हो सकती है, आवाज में घरघराहट हो सकती है.

क्‍या है समाधान
समस्या के समाधान के लिए आपको अपने आहार में पर्याप्त मात्रा में आयोडीन का सेवन करना चाहिए. इस बारे में कोई प्रमाण नहीं मिले हैं कि पत्तागोभी, ब्रॉक्ली, गोभी, पालक और सोया उत्पादों के सेवन से थॉयराइड की गतिविधियों में बाधा आती है. लेकिन बेहतर होगा कि थॉयराइड की दवा लेने के बाद कम से कम चार घंटे तक इन उत्पादों या आयरन एवं सप्लीमेंट का सेवन न करें. डॉक्‍टर से सलाह लें.

क्‍या खाएं
हाइपरथॉयराइड के मरीज को अपने आहार में पर्याप्त मात्रा में फाइबर का सेवन करना चाहिए. सब्जियों, फलों, मेवों और साबुत अनाज का सेवन भरपूर मात्रा में करें. हाइपोथॉयराइड के मरीज को रोजाना 8-10 गिलास पानी पीना चाहिए, इससे इससे शरीर का मेटाबोलिज्म तेज हो जाता है.
