Green Coffee, Your New Weight Loss Buddy

Are you one of those who cannot do without a hot cup of coffee as the first thing in the morning? Does the steamy and aromatic coffee makes you feel energetic? Yes? What if we say that this habit can help you lose weight as well? Interesting right?

But for that, you need to be mindful while picking the coffee. It is not the brown coffee but the green one that can be your new weight loss buddy. According to researchers, having green coffee regularly along with healthy food and indulging in exercise can help you shed those extra kilos rapidly.

How green coffee helps in weight loss?

Green coffee beans are not roasted and therefore contain a compound called chlorogenic acid. This compound is known to have antioxidant effects that help in coping up with stress, a major contributor to weight gain. Also, chlorogenic acid can help you get rid of the excess fat by increasing your body’s basal metabolic rate. This can potentially reduce the glucose release in the bloodstream through the liver. As a result of this, your body starts burning excess fat and you lose weight.

Not only this, consumption of green coffee can increase satiety and prevents overeating which is a major reason behind weight gain. This is important for people with zero control over the food portion.

How to prepare and consume green coffee?

Green coffee can be prepared the same way you make black coffee. You can add honey or cinnamon to the coffee to add flavour in it.

Though you can have green coffee at any time of the day, consuming it just after having a meal is considered extremely helpful. Doing this can keep your blood sugar under control and help you in effective weight loss.

Drinking Coffee Improves Sports Performance: Study

Researchers have found that drinking coffee is associated with improving sports performance in both men and women.

For the study, published in the journal Nutrients, the researchers from Coventry University in the UK picked 38 participants (19 men, 19 women) and found that drinking caffeinated coffee improves speed of cycling.

According to the researchers, participants restricted coffee consumption for 12 hours before drinking either — coffee providing (3mg.kg minus one) of caffeine, a placebo in water or nothing as a control.

In a 5 km cycling time trial, following coffee ingestion, the performance of both men and women improved by approximately nine seconds and six seconds as compared with placebo and control, respectively.

No difference in performance was observed between the placebo and control.

The study’s findings suggest that both men and women respond similarly to coffee and that its ingestion may be a practical source of caffeine prior to exercise for improving performance.

The finding also contributes to the growing body of research that highlights the ergogenic benefit of coffee ingestion.

To date, much of the research on this topic has focused only on anhydrous caffeine and men, said the researchers.

Do You Drink Too Much Coffee?

If you have been wondering how much coffee is too much, here is your answer.  A research from the University of South Australia has revealed that drinking six or more cups of coffee in a day can increase your risk of heart disease by up to 22 per cent. The study researchers say that drinking 6 cups of coffees or more can be linked to a high risk of high blood pressure which could ultimately cause heart disease.

For long, we have associated excess coffee consumption with more jitteriness and anxiety. But this is a serious side effect of overconsumption that should make you stick to a moderate amount of this simulator. There is, of course, nothing wrong in having the usual 2 or 3 cups of coffee. You must also make sure that you are not having coffee post 4 or 5 pm. Drinking caffeine after that time can detrimentally affect your sleep. Here are some other side effects of coffee you have got to beware of:

If you have been having cups of coffee to stay alert and beat drowsiness, you could, in fact, suffer from insomnia.  Having coffee especially in the later part of the day (that is post 5 pm) can keep you awake through the night. The stimulating powers of coffee are best taken advantage of in the morning or early afternoon.

Did you know that having too much coffee during your exams or before an important meeting can make you even more stressed? This is because coffee can stimulate the production of cortisol, the stress hormone. This can mean more anxiety and even headache.

Coffee can be bad for your immune system if you have it in excess. Some compounds in coffee can block  certain infection-fighting cells in the body that prevent the entry of foreign bodies in your blood stream.

Caffeine-Free Arousal: Ways to Feel More Awake Without Coffee

A new study says that coffee can have a placebo effect on the arousal and focus levels in regular drinkers without actual consumption. The study, published in the Journal of Consciousness and Cognition says that people who regularly drink coffee react to the smell of coffee in a certain way and hence smelling coffee can cause certain psychoactive and arousing effects. According to the researchers, the chemical receptors in our body are activated to obtain the same arousal sensations after we smell it or walk past our favourite café, without the actual consumption of coffee.
The researchers explained that this clearly goes on to show that what we eat influences us in a far greater way than just our consumption. It can also alter our way of thinking. Now, we are not saying you to completely give up coffee. After all, coffee has many health benefits. However, if you are one of those who keeps drinking coffee to keep yourself awake or if you can’t keep your hands off sugary and fatty coffee beverages to stay alert and awake, here are some other ways you can try for that extra boost of energy and freshness:

Keep sipping on water: This is quite an understated trick to feel fresh. Every time you feel like nodding off to sleep, drink a big glass of water. This is because, without water, you can feel severely dehydrated which could be the reason behind you feeling tired.

Listen to music: Plug in your earphones and burst out your favourite tunes on your laptop as you work. This is a quick way to make your brain feel active and happy.

Face the sun: Most offices are very dimly lit and they can contribute to you feel lethargic. Various research studies have shown that taking in sunlight can actually wake you up. This is why it is always recommended to open up your curtains as soon as you wake up to let the sunlight come in. Sunlight can help boost the levels of serotonin in your brain which can uplift your mood.

Bite into an apple: With its natural sugars and high content of dietary fibre, apple serves as a good alternative to coffee when it comes to giving you energy to stay awake. Apple also has plenty of nutrients that are good for your overall health.

5 Reasons Why You Must Drink Coffee Every Day

Your daily cup of coffee can not only keep you awake during never-ending meetings and work assignments. Coffee has powerful chemical compounds that work to prevent diseases. Coffee could also fight prostate cancer, according to a new study published in the journal The Prostate. A test that was carried out on mice showed that two compounds found in coffee, kahweol acetate and cafestol could inhibit the growth of prostate cancer tumours.
Coffee has been shown to exhibit some other incredible health benefits too and there’s every reason why you need to have coffee every day.

Keeps diabetes away: A study states that the compounds chlorogenic acid and quinides in coffee increase sensitivity to insulin and hence lower blood glucose levels. That’s why coffee is known for its anti-diabetic properties.

Good for weight loss: If you ask anybody who identifies herself or himself as a fitness freak about their favourite type of stimulant, the answer, most often, is black coffee. Black coffee has been shown to suppress appetite and boost your metabolism. These make it excellent for weight loss.

Stimulates your brain: Coffee has plenty of antioxidants which work to fight free radical damage. It is also known to be beneficial to neurotransmitters of your brain and that’s why some studies link it to a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.

Keeps your heart healthy: Coffee is known to help widen your arteries because of the presence of nitric oxide. It has anti-inflammatory properties too. If you want to keep cardiovascular diseases and stroke away, it would be a good idea to have a cup of coffee daily.

Makes your skin beautiful: Thanks to the presence of antioxidants in it, coffee is known for imparting beauty benefits too. Moderate consumption of coffee can help prevent wrinkles and other signs of ageing. You can also use coffee grounds as a face scrub to exfoliate your skin and keep it acne and blackhead-free. Please note that excess coffee consumption can dehydrate your skin and expedite the ageing process.

Keep in mind:

-It is best to have your coffee black without milk and sugar. But if you can’t, make sure you stick to fresh milk and stick to just 2 small teaspoons of sugar or a sugar-free alternative.
-Just because it is healthy, it doesn’t mean that you can go overboard with coffee. Stick to a maximum of 3 cups a day.
-Always have your last cup of coffee latest by 3 pm. Caffeine consumption post 3 pm can hamper your sleep cycle.
-Instead of the vending machine coffee, try making your own by using fresh coffee grounds or instant coffee granules. You must keep in mind that vending machines may not be regularly cleaned and can hence pose a risk to your health.

Are You a Tea or Coffee Person? Study Says The Answer May Lie in Your Genes

Are you a tea or coffee person? The answer may lie in your genetic predisposition towards bitter tastes, say researchers. It could be because bitterness acts as a natural warning system to protect us from harmful substances.

The study, led by researchers from US-based Northwestern University, and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Australia, explored reactions to three bitter substances — caffeine, quinine and propylthiouracil (PROP) — to understand how they affect people’s preference for drinking tea, coffee and alcohol.

The findings showed that people who were more sensitive to caffeine and were drinking a lot of coffee consumed low amounts of tea. In other words, people who have a heightened ability to taste coffee’s bitterness — and particularly the distinct bitter flavour of caffeine — learn to associate “good things with it”.

“You’d expect that people who are particularly sensitive to the bitter taste of caffeine would drink less coffee,” said Marilyn Cornelis, assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

“The opposite results of our study suggest coffee consumers acquire a taste or an ability to detect caffeine due to the learned positive reinforcement (stimulation) elicited by caffeine.”

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, also found that people sensitive to the bitter flavours of quinine and of PROP — a synthetic taste related to the compounds in cruciferous vegetables — avoid coffee.

For alcohol, a higher sensitivity to the bitterness of PROP resulted in lower alcohol consumption, particularly of red wine.

“The findings suggest our perception of bitter tastes, informed by our genetics, contributes to the preference for coffee, tea and alcohol,” Cornelis said.

Scientists applied Mendelian randomisation — a technique commonly used in disease epidemiology — to test the causal relationship between bitter taste and beverage consumption in more than 4,00,000 men and women in the UK.
